Friday Night Kayaking

Join us every Friday night at Pelee Wings Beach, 6-8pm, for a fun evening of paddling, sharing techniques and meeting some fellow paddlers. Free with your kayak, or rent one from us at $30 for 2 hours. We depart at 6pm sharp so arrive at 5:30 to gear up. Sometimes we split up the group with a fast group in touring or sea-kayaks and a slower moving group in recreational kayayks. This is a good time to test paddle for a few hours a kayak you may be considering for purchase. The fun continues after paddling when the group gets together for dinner and drinks.

Please call by 3pm Friday to check on weather conditions and/or to reserve a kayak. We are not deterred by a little wind on the lake, but we will cancel out if there are threatening storms or serious rain.

The Ultimate Guide to Choosing the Perfect Kayak

Are you in the market for a new kayak? Whether you're a beginner or an experienced paddler, this guide has got you covered. From different types of kayaks to consider, to important features and considerations, you'll find all the information you need to find the perfect kayak for your needs and preferences.

Determine Your Kayaking Style and Skill Level.

Before you start shopping for a kayak, it's important to determine your kayaking style and skill level. Are you a beginner looking for a stable and easy-to-maneuver kayak? Or are you an experienced paddler looking for a high-performance kayak for whitewater or sea kayaking? Understanding your kayaking style and skill level will help you narrow down your options and find a kayak that suits your needs. Consider factors such as the type of water you'll be kayaking on, the distance and duration of your trips, and the level of maneuverability and stability you require. By determining your kayaking style and skill level, you'll be able to make a more informed decision and find the perfect kayak for your adventures.

Consider the Type of Water You'll Be Kayaking On.

One important factor to consider when choosing a kayak is the type of water you'll be kayaking on. Different kayaks are designed for different types of water, so it's important to choose one that is suitable for your intended environment. If you'll be kayaking on calm lakes or slow-moving rivers, a recreational kayak or a touring kayak may be a good choice. These kayaks are stable and easy to maneuver, making them ideal for beginners or those who prefer a more relaxed paddling experience. On the other hand, if you'll be tackling whitewater rapids or venturing out into the open sea, you'll need a kayak that is specifically designed for these more challenging conditions. Whitewater kayaks and sea kayaks are built to handle rough waters and provide the necessary stability and maneuverability for these types of adventures. By considering the type of water you'll be kayaking on, you can ensure that you choose a kayak that is well-suited to your needs and will enhance your kayaking experience.

Choose the Right Kayak Size and Weight Capacity.

When choosing a kayak, it's important to consider the size and weight capacity that will best suit your needs. The size of the kayak will determine how well it fits you and how comfortable you will be while paddling. A kayak that is too small may feel cramped and restrict your movement, while a kayak that is too large may be difficult to maneuver. Additionally, you'll want to consider the weight capacity of the kayak to ensure that it can safely support your weight and any additional gear or equipment you may be bringing along. It's important to choose a kayak with a weight capacity that exceeds your own weight to allow for added stability and safety on the water. By selecting the right size and weight capacity for your kayak, you can ensure a comfortable and enjoyable paddling experience.

Decide on the Kayak Material and Construction.

When choosing a kayak, it's important to consider the material and construction of the kayak. There are several different materials to choose from, each with its own advantages and disadvantages.

One popular option is polyethylene, which is a durable and affordable material. Polyethylene kayaks are resistant to impact and abrasion, making them a great choice for beginners or those who plan to paddle in rocky or shallow waters. However, they can be heavier and less responsive than other materials.

Another option is fiberglass, which is known for its lightweight and high-performance qualities. Fiberglass kayaks are more responsive and maneuverable, making them a great choice for experienced paddlers or those who plan to do more advanced maneuvers. However, they can be more expensive and less durable than other materials.

Carbon fiber is another material to consider, known for its strength and lightweight properties. Carbon fiber kayaks are extremely lightweight and offer excellent performance on the water. However, they can be quite expensive and may not be as durable as other materials.

Finally, there are also inflatable kayaks, which are made from durable PVC or rubber materials. Inflatable kayaks are lightweight, easy to transport, and can be quickly inflated and deflated. They are a great option for those who have limited storage space or who want a kayak that is easy to travel with. However, they may not offer the same level of performance or durability as solid kayaks.

Consider your paddling needs and preferences when choosing the material and construction of your kayak. Each option has its own pros and cons, so take the time to research and test different kayaks to find the one that best suits your needs.

Test Out Different Kayaks Before Making a Final Decision.

Before making a final decision on which kayak to purchase, it's important to test out different options. This will give you a chance to see how each kayak feels and performs on the water. Come talk to one of our experts at Pelee Wings and try out a selection on our private beach. Take advantage of these opportunities to paddle different kayaks and see which one feels the most comfortable and suits your paddling style. It's also a good idea to talk to experienced paddlers or join a kayaking group to get recommendations and advice. By testing out different kayaks, you can make an informed decision and choose the perfect kayak for your needs.
